Feedback is a Gift
Receiving critical feedback is one of the greatest gifts you can receive in your personal or professional life.
The truth is, very few people are brave enough to offer honest opinions about how you are coming across or where you might need improvement.
This is especially true the further you get in your career and the more senior you become. There is little upside for a peer or a direct report to tell you how you’re coming across.
Most of the time, people avoid giving feedback to sidestep uncomfortable conversations, fearing they might hurt your feelings or strain the relationship.
When someone does offer feedback—especially the kind that might be hard to hear—treat it like a treasure. This person has stepped out of their comfort zone, showing care for your growth by pointing out areas where you can improve. That is a rare form of generosity and courage.
Of course, feedback can sometimes feel uncomfortable. It’s natural to get defensive or want to dismiss it. However, if you can see it for what it really is—a tool to help you grow—then your perspective will shift.
The next time someone gives you feedback, pause, listen carefully, and reflect and say these magic words: “Thank you for the feedback.”
Even if you don’t fully agree with it, there’s often value in seeing yourself from another’s viewpoint.
