Learning Tool Deep Dive: Revision.ai

I’m learning how to learn and exploring tools to help me learn better.

Today’s tool is called Revision.ai. I found it on a Hacker News post.

The Product Promise

Revision.ai is a flashcard maker with three promises:

  1. Make flashcards from your notes (pdf, pptx, docx) in 4 minutes

  2. Get studying done with memorable bitesize exercises

  3. Tailored to you, export flaschards easily

Target Customer

Revision.ai is trying to attract students. It lists a few universities where it is used including University of Cambridge and University of Oxford.

Product Experience

When I login, I’m taken to this screen to upload the information I want to study.

I have a study guide about startups I add to regularly. I uploaded that document.

The flashcards took approximately 6 minutes to generate.

The tool created a neat separation of different topic types automatically.

I clicked “Study Now” which took me to this screen:

I’m starting with “Quiz” which they say is the easier way to study. The first question was not great.

I clicked “Reference: Page 8” but the link was broken.

The second question was not any better and they never got better.

I moved back and tried “Write” and the questions were equally poor.

The things were broken so I couldn’t see what they were referencing.

They have an upsell to learn with unlimited AI and exercises. At this point, I’ve lost confidence it would be worth it though.

Summary

My grade for this product is an F. The quizzes were very poor and not relevant to helping me learn.

Maybe it was my source material? Its possible. However, my study guides are a collection of my notes learning on a topic. I’d expect the AI to be able to piece them together into some coherent question topics.
